Released as a tie-in with Valentine's Day 2009, Motown's
Love Songs series gave roughly the same treatment to five of its artists: 12 highlights dealing with love and heartache, decent no-frills packaging, $10 retail price. Along with
Smokey Robinson,
Gladys Knight & the Pips,
the Jackson 5, and
the Commodores,
Diana Ross & the Supremes were made part of the series, and while there are some essential singles here -- "Stop! In the Name of Love," "I Hear a Symphony," "Someday We'll Be Together" -- the disc should be seen as a sampler rather than a proper anthology. "Come See About Me" and "Where Did Our Love Go," at the very least, should be on any
Supremes compilation, regardless of purpose.
